10 TEMPLES ON 2 WHEELS
VICKI BEYER’S 10 TEMPLES ON 2 WHEELS INTRODUCTION Kamakura is best known to most foreign visitors as the site of a giant statue of Buddha sitting outdoors in a lovely garden. But there is much, much more to Kamakura than just the famed Great Buddha. There are three faces to Kamakura: the city as a place where people work and live, the city as a seaside resort, and the city of historical sites. This book is for the intrepid traveller who wants to have a bit of an adventure while seeing more of historical Kamakura than just the “main attraction” of the Great Buddha. This book presents a number of different ways of approaching the sights of Kamakura. It evolved from the fun but ambitious bicycle course that is our favorite way of seeing a varied sampling of Kamakura’s most interesting sights. It also includes other bicycle courses and some alternatives for those people who prefer navigating on two feet rather than two wheels. Each course can be done as a day trip from Tokyo, although there’s so much to see and do in Kamakura that it would be easy to spend several days, if your itinerary allows. This book does not purport to be a comprehensive guide to Kamakura. It includes minimal information about shopping and restaurants. There are many other sources for that information. What this book offers are some suggested approaches to the best of the city’s historical temples and shrines, together with information (both trivial and substantial) and stories about those temples and shrines as well as some of the insights on Kamakura that we’ve gathered over the years. We hope you enjoy them.
