DRUGS, SPORT AND
THE LAW
Antonio (Tony) Buti is a graduate of the University of Western
Australia (B.P.E.( Hons) 1982; Dip. Ed., 1983; M.I.R., 1996) and
the Australian National University (LL.B ( Hons) 1992). In 203,
he completed his DPhil at Oxford University on guardianship law
and the removal of Aboriginal children from their families.
Mr Buti has lectured in law at the School of Law. Murdoch University,
since May 1997. Currently he is a senior lecturer and the JLV/ Louis
St John Johnson Memorial Trust Fellow in Aboriginal Legal Issues
and Public Policy. He is also the Associate Dean (Research) and
the Director of the Asia-Pacific Centre of Human Rights and the
Prevention of Ethnic Conflict. Prior to moving to Murdoch University,
Mr Buti worked in private practice in Perth and for the Aboriginal
Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc.).
He is admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor to the Supreme Court
of Western Australia and the High Court of Australia. Mr Buti has
written books, articles and other publications in the area of removal
of Aboriginal children from their families, British child migrants,
human rights, drug testing in sport and sports law in general.
He has three times competed in the Concours International de Plaidoires
in Caen, France, gaining second place in 1997 and third place in
2001. He has also co-produced and co-directed a documentary on racial
vilification in sport. Mr Buti teaches in equity and trusts, Aboriginal
Legal Issues and employment and industrial relations law.
